Former Manchester United captain Gary Neville has been appointed as head coach of La Liga side Valencia until the end of the 2015-16 season.

Neville, 40, retired from football in 2011 and has been working as part of England manager Roy Hodgon's coaching staff and as a pundit for Sky Sports -- he will continue his work with the Three Lions ahead of Euro 2016.

Valencia have been seeking a new manager after Nuno resigned following a 1-0 loss at Sevilla on Sunday.

Gary Neville's younger brother, Phil, was already on the coaching staff at the Mestalla, and will be assisting caretaker boss Voro for Wednesday's Copa del Rey last-32 first leg at Segunda B side Barakaldo.

Gary Neville, who knows Valencia's Singapore-based owner Peter Lim from their shared association with English non-league side Salford City, said on the club's official website: "I am absolutely thrilled to be given this opportunity with Valencia.

"Valencia are a huge football club of immense standing and I know from my time as a player the passion and dedication of the Valencia fans.

"I am really looking forward to working with the club's talented group of players and am excited about the challenge ahead."

Neville's first match in charge of Los Che, who take on Barcelona this weekend, is set to be at home against Lyon in the Champions league on Dec. 9.

Valencia president Layhoon Chan said earlier this week that Lim himself would appoint the club's next coach, while saying that Portuguese super agent Jorge Mendes would not be involved in the decision.

Chan said: "We are delighted to have secured Gary so quickly.

"He combines top level coaching experience through his role as a senior coach with the England national team and a world-class playing career with England and Manchester United.

"Throughout his career Gary has always shown great leadership both on and off the pitch. He is hugely respected in English football and it was his personal qualities which persuaded us that he was the right choice to lead Valencia until the end of the season."

Valencia are currently ninth in La Liga while they are third in Champions League Group H, a point below Gent with one match to play.

Club director Kim Koh broke the news to the squad, who are in the Basque Country preparing for Wednesday evening's Copa del Rey game.

Chan and Neville are to speak to the press at Mestalla on Thursday afternoon.
